Ten Most Valuable Comic Books

I hope some of you have saved your old comic book collections. As noted previously the Spiderman original comic just sold at auction for a cool One Million Dollars.

Here's the top ten most valuable comic books collected. It is good to know which ones so you can check your collection. You can also look for them at flea markets and garage sales. If you do have a collection it is important to keep them in a safe, dry place and covered with saran wrap or plastic.

Condition of the comic has everything to do with the price.

Why did these small little books sell for so much money?

That's part of the magic of comic book collecting. This isn't your standard kind of collection. There is an incredible history here. Decades upon decades of people have lived the life of comic book collecting.

There are new comics, old comics, and historical comics -- all waiting and wanting to be collected. Each of them has its own, magnificent, story.

Here's the list:

1. Action Comics No. 1 from 1938 is worth $ 1,390,0002. Detective Comics No. 27 in 1939 is worth $ 1,380,0003. Superman No. 1 from 1939 is worth $ 671,0004. All American Comics No. 16 from 1939 is worth $ 430,0005. Detective Comics No. 1 from 1937 is worth $ 405,0006. Marvel Comics No. 1 from 1939 is worth $ 367,0007. Batman No. 1 in 1940 is worth $ 359,0008. More Fun Comics No. 52 is worth $ 316,0009. Flash Comics No. 1 in 1940 is worth $ 289,00010. Amazing Fantasy No. 15 (spiderman) is worth $ 280,000

My mouth was hanging open when I saw these numbers. Unbelievable prices for comic books that used to cost 10 cents and up. It gives me a whole new appreciation for Superheroes. Batman, Superman, Spiderman, the Green Hornet and others can actually make people rich !

One of the most important concepts you'll come to understand as a comic book collector is that of supply and demand. Many collectors are not familiar with this concept and do not understand why the comics they bought 5 years ago are barely worth cover price.

If you knew what to look for and buy at garage sales and flea markets you could make a fortune. So what do you look for ? Check out the great guide book with all the information you need.

Marvel wraps up its summer comic event with a double-sized finale of Fear Itself leaving lasting repercussions to each of the characters involved. The untold story between the Serpent and Odin's past is revealed within the pages of the Mighty Thor before Fear Itself architect Matt Fraction treats Thor like he treated Iron Man following the events of Secret Invasion and through Dark Reign with Most Wanted. That storyline deconstructed Tony Stark allowing him to be built up again and now Fraction plans to do the same with Thor.

Other Fear Itself tie-ins include Avengers, Avengers Academy, Invincible Iron Man, and Journey into Mystery. Avengers will be undergoing a status quo shift due to the sacrifices of Thor within Fear Itself.

Avengers Academy will be going through a status quo change while the Invincible Iron Man who is now one of the Mighty thanks to Odin completes his task during Fear Itself. Journey into Mystery presents Loki's journey into the stronghold of the Serpent while another tale tells the story behind Fear Itself from the point of view of Volstagg.

The Hulk was put through his paces as he became a member of the Serpent's Worthy and took on Dracula in Fear Itself: Hulk Vs. Dracula. The Incredible Hulk title ended Greg Pak's run on the title with the Heart of the Monster storyline. Now Marvel relaunches the title with Jason Aaron and Marc Silvestri at the helm with Incredible Hulk. Meanwhile Jeff Parker has provided adequate stories of the Red Hulk within his sole series Hulk.

Writer Dan Slott brings Spider-Island to an end within the pages of the Amazing Spider-Man. The series will be reaching 700 issues next year just in time for the Amazing Spider-Man movie. The series will most likely be relaunched with a new number one much like most of the Marvel titles when they have their own movies hitting the theaters.

Avengers: The Children's Crusade reaches its penultimate issue as both Avengers and the X-Men team-up against the Young Avengers leading to the death of an Avenger. Writer Ed Brubaker continues his adventures of Steve Rogers in Captain America drawn by artist Steve McNiven. McNiven is also completing theSuperior series by writer Mark Millar who plans on concentrating on his creator-owned projects for the foreseeable future.

Big shot writers Mark Waid, Greg Rucka, and Brian Michael Bendis focus on delivering character-driven stories within Daredevil, Punisher, and Moon Knight. While Jason Aaron focuses on the adult version of the Punisher in PunisherMax.

Jonathan Hickman continues the new adventures of the Fantastic Four within FF as the series reaches its twelfth issue next month which is also the 600th issue of the Fantastic Four in November. Hickman continues his second volume of Shield as he supplies new mythology to the Marvel Universe.

The X-Men Universe splits as Fear Itself ends within X-Men Schism. The split brings the final issue of Uncanny X-Men and a new series of Wolverine and the X-Men. Most of the X-titles will bring the fallout between Cyclops and Wolverine and new direction of the mutants for the future as they star in next year's Marvel event.

The Ultimate Universe continues following the events of Ultimate Fallout as the world finds out the US government is responsible for mutants in Ultimate Comics X-Men and the new Spider-Man soars through the skyline of New York in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Nick Fury is back in charge rescuing the world again with Ultimate Comics Ultimates and Ultimate Comics Hawkeye.

Overall Marvel Comics has its own publishing schedule according to Joe Quesada, which will not be altered due to its rival DC Comics relaunching all of their titles. Most of the Fear Itself and Spider-Island tie-ins seem to be bombarding the comic racks rather than adding to the comic experience.

Star Wars and sequential art share a long history: Star Wars debuted on the comic-book page in 1977, when Marvel Comics began publishing a six-part adaptation of the first film, which morphed into a monthly comic book. Now, more than three decades later, new series by Dark Horse Comics continue to expand the Star Wars galaxy. The second book in the Star Wars Art series, Star Wars Art: Comics brings together the very best artwork from the entire history of Star Wars comics publishing, showcasing original art from the top comics artists working in the industry. Hand-selected and curated by George Lucas, the art featured in this volume includes interior pages and fully painted covers from artists such as Al Williamson, Howard Chaykin, Adam Hughes, Bill Sienkiewicz, Dave Dorman, and many more—as well as new work created exclusively for this book by over 20 renowned artists, including John Cassaday, Sam Kieth, Mike Mignola, Paul Pope, Frank Quitely, Jim Steranko, and other comics superstars. Star Wars Art: Comics is a tribute to sequential storytelling, a worthy and justly celebrated art form. Available now where books are sold. Find out more: www.abramsbooks.com

Marvel Comics celebrates the coming of 2011 with a 64 page book containing seven stories by the top comic writers with Point One promising the biggest change in over 35 years.

Following this summer's event Fear Itself, the Post-Fear Itself era of Marvel begins with Shattered Heroes which is the epilogue as well as the prelude detailing the adventures of Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, and Hulk as they cope with the aftermath of the Serpent before leading to next year's Avengers Event. The Fear Itself Point One issues detail Captain America dealing with the death of Bucky, Tony Stark and Odin having a conversation, and the fate of Thor. Battle Scars continues the Post-Fear Itself Marvel Universe by introducing Army Ranger Marcus Jones.

The Avengers titles seem to be overexposed with Secret Avengers, Avengers Origins, Avengers 1959, and Avengers: Solo titles along with the two main ones Avengers and New Avengers.

The Avengers seem to be the X-Men of the 90s where that franchise had numerous titles saturating the market. Both Avengers and New Avengers written by Brian Michael Bendis dealing with the return of Norman Osborn, H.A.M.M.E.R, and the return of the Dark Avengers. The Avengers Academy begins a new status quo with new students and a new staff by Christos Gage.

Captain Americacloses out the American Dreamers story arc by Ed Brubaker and Steve McNiven (Nemesis) as Matt Fraction begins the tale of the new God of Thunder within the pages of the Mighty Thor.

Jason Aaron brings the past of the Punisher to light within PunisherMax as the Kingpin hires the deadly assassin known as Elektra. Aaron is also writing the Incredible Hulk series with artist Marc Silvestri (Cyberforce) while Jeff Parker brings the Red Hulk against the Hulk of Arabia in the adjective less Hulk.

Jonathan Hickman (Fantastic Four) establishes the Ultimate Universe Nick Fury after he put the Marvel-616 Nick Fury through his paces in Secret Warriors. Now Hickman writes both Ultimate Comics Ultimates and Ultimate Comics Hawkeye. After killing off Johnny Storm and creating the Future Foundation, Hickman returns the Fantastic Four to the original numbering for the 50th anniversary issue while continuing the adventures of FF.

The Marvel Ultimate Universe is a very tight set of books giving you an overview of how the Marvel Universe would look like in the 21st century. Miles Morales was recently introduced in Ultimate Comics Fallout however his origins still remain a mystery yet to be revealed by mastermind Brian Michael Bendis in Ultimate Comics Spider-Man. Writer Nick Spencer (T.H.U.N.D.E.R. Agents) takes over the Ultimate Comics X-Men after the world has found out mutants were created by the US Government.

X-Men's Schism also builds towards next year's event revealing who is Hope and the return of Cable. Writer Rick Remender (The Last Days of American Crime) continues towards the finale of his Dark Angel Saga within Uncanny X-Force. However the other titles following Schism does not seem to be strong as all the stories will lead into next year's main event.

Under the Icon Imprint by Marvel Comics, both Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Millar have taken advantage of this program. Bendis continues the Second American Revolution with Scarlet while bringing the superhero antics of Brilliant. Mark Millar finishes his creator-owned title with Leinil Francis Yu with a double-sized finale of Superior.

Comic fans want stories that matter and make a difference to the reader now. The Post-Fear Itself titles seem to be the beginning of something special as our heroes deal with the consequences of their actions. The mutant titles seem to be a convoluted set of stories all which will eventually lead to next summer's event. Basically the X-Men Universe seem to be put on the backburner as the Avengers are pushed towards the forefront as the movie premieres next May.

Majority of comic industry news has been centered on DC Comics relaunching of their entire line in September. While Marvel Comics has been centering on a major status quo change in October following the final issue of Fear Itself. Marvel is positioning their characters to take advantage of their 2012 blockbuster movies Avengers and the Amazing Spider-Man by Marvel Studios.

Like DC Comics the Ultimate Comics Universe gets relaunched with three new titles and one limited series. Ultimate Comics Spider-Man begins following this summer's Death of Spider-Man event. The solicitations are very secretive as we are introduced to this new Spider-Man during Ultimate Fallout in August. The new series continues under veteran Ultimate Spider-Man writer Brian Michael Bendis.

Nick Spencer (Jimmy Olsen, Morning Glories) and X-Men artist Paco Media kick off Ultimate Comics X-Men which begins as Jeph Loeb and Arthur Adams' Ultimate X series concludes while picking up on the mutant cover-up revealed within Brian Michael Bendis' Ultimate Origins.

Ultimate Comics Ultimates and the four-issue limited series Ultimate Comics Hawkeye are both written by FF scribe Jonathan Hickman.

Hickman has proven himself as an establish writer taking on Secret Warriors, Fantastic Four, FF, and S.H.I.E.L.D. He presents a grounded world views within all his titles by creating believable relationships within each character. Looking forward to both these titles.

Fear Itself #6 is the penultimate chapter setting for another status quo change on the level of Dark Reign. Much of the other Fear Itself tie-in titles do not hold much weight since so much weighs on the final issue in October. The majority of spoilers are presented in the solicitations themselves as Daredevil joins the New Avengers and Tony Stark is finishing a secret weapon in Svartalfheim (A sword as revealed on the Fear Itself #5 cover).

Journey into Mystery #627 and #628 have peaked my interest as part of the story is drawn by Whilce Portacio and Kieron Gillen weaves a tale about Mephisto leaving Hell and entering a bar to influence the common man.

Dan Slott continues his run on Amazing Spider-Man who has shown his love of the character and passion for storytelling. Slott is writing two Spider-Man books per month and keeping the high quality on each book. He is truly a talented writer for the 21st century comic audience.

Looking over at the Avengers franchise of comics Brian Michael Bendis offers the New Avengers Annual #1 and New Avengers #16.1. The New Avengers annual offers art by Secret Wars painter Gabriele Dell'Otto reintroducing the Revengers into the Marvel Universe. The introductory Point One issue of New Avengers brings back Norman Osborn and H.A.M.M.E.R leading into the return of the Dark Avengers!

Ed Brubaker continues his new Captain America series introducing him to movie goers who are willing to go comic book stores to pick up the book. As Matt Fraction ends his story within the Mighty Thor which was also recently relaunched due to the Thor movie. Jeff Parker concludes his Omegex Saga within Hulk detailing the buildup of Red Hulk's rogue gallery.

Marvel relaunched several new and existing series to establish classic characters. Jonathan Hickman continues his FF saga rocketing towards the twelve issue which will lead back to either Fantastic Four #600 or FF #600. Mark Waid continues his run on Daredevil giving it a breathe of fresh air. Former Daredevil writer Brian Michael Bendis continues with his Daredevil artist Alex Maleev on Moon Knight.

The Punisher is under the reigns of Greg Rucka (Whiteout) bringing the anti-hero aspect back within the book while his counterpart Jason Aaron gives us the unrated version of the Punisher with PunisherMax.

The X-Men franchise will undergo a major status quo as Jason Aaron wraps up his X-Men: Schism arc. Aaron is also continuing his Wolverine title following his last arc Wolverine's Revenge. Wolverine is also in his own mini series Marvel Universe Vs. Wolverine written by Jonathan Maberry who gave us Marvel Universe Vs. The Punisher last year.

The adjectiveless X-Men title written by Victor Gischler presenting the team-up between FF and X-Men with both former villains Doctor Doom and Magneto now at their sides.

Uncanny X-Force is nearing the end of The Dark Angel Saga paying homage to the Dark Phoenix Saga back in the 1980s with writer Rick Remender (The Last Days of American Crime). Marvel Point One issue hits X-Factor as Peter David introduces to the new team which first consisted of the original X-Men under Professor X.

Not Interest…..Yet or Never

Never start a series with a tie-in as it doesn't develop a firm foundation for the series. Ghost Rider does just that however may not be connected to Fear Itself at all however only serving as a marketing gimmick for collectors willing to collect the series along with Fear Itself.

Fear Itself: Hulk Vs. Dracula present a three issue battle between the two characters. The series seems to bring Razio Kodo to save the Vampire Nation as they take on the Hulk who is serving the Worthy.

Uncanny X-Men brings Colossus to transform himself into the Juggernaut to stop Marko Cain. Other mutant titles include Fear Itself: Uncanny X-Force and Fear Itself: Wolverine These tie-ins has little effect on the X-Men line as Schism plays a major factor into next month's final issue of Uncanny X-Men.

One of the lessons Marvel Comics need to learn is not to bombard the reader with numerous tie-ins or else they will lose interest in the main title. The main titles are under ordered to make room for their tie-ins. Fear Itself has 20 tie-ins while Spider-Island has 8 tie-ins for a total of 28 books that are cannibalizing quality comics and taking up store space. Much like the Fear Itself tie-ins, the Spider-lsland tie-ins are written by various writers who have very little to do with the Spider-Man Universe. Unless the title is written by series writer Dan Slott, these titles are to be avoided to save money. Marvel Comics need to be sensitive to retailers instead of bombarding them with stuff they need to sell to raise quarterly earnings on the stock market.

45 years ago In comics, in 1964, The Amazing Spider-Man was in it’s first full year of publication, and Justice League was having their second cross-universe adventure, the Fantastic Four had yet to met Galactus and Daredevil was about to go from his yellow and red to his red costume.

But what about comic books in the rest of the world?

Here are 4 examples of comics from other counties in 1964

Great Britain, Diana: good clean, boring, fun… or strange portent of things to come?

Italy, Kriminal: Family killed by criminals he dons a yellow and black costume and starts handing out some very sadistic justice.

France, Star Cine Adventures: Yes that’s Robert Mitchum, this is one of those comics that were popular in Europe but never made it in America where it’s made out of photos with word balloons added, or a combination of headshots and drawings. Personally I always found those things kind of creepy for some reason.

The Philippines, Paraluman Komiks: I have no idea who she is, but I like the costume!

I have resently found out that Paraluman is a famous actress from the Philippines.

Article by Sue Jan

A comic book, or comics for short, is a magazine or book containing sequential art in the form of a narrative. Since the formulation of the comic book format in the 1930s, young and old alike have enjoyed comics. However, the comic industry lost some of its popularity when it came down with a crash in the mid 1990s.

To promote its popularity once again the comic book industry is producing films based on the comic book stories. This method proved successful for few stories like Sin City, X-men and Spiderman but it failed miserably for other titles that flopped at the box office. So far this approach seems unable to rejuvenate the comic book industry.

Research shows that the main cause of downfall of the comic industry is the removal of comic books from shops and stores. But this cannot be the sole cause since comic books are now easily available on the internet, in movies and animations.

Another question that comes to mind is why Japanese animation or "manga" is doing better then traditional comic books? The answer is simple. The Japanese write a better story line and their animated movies are made for a wider audience. Often, Japanese comic books are framed as graphic novels containing 70 to 220 pages for a mature audience. The manga holds a more important place in Japanese culture, and is both well respected as an art form and also as a form of popular literature. On the other hand, comic books in Western countries are generally geared towards young teenagers rather than adults. This approach has made it tough for the Western comic industry to attain its dominant position.

Common misconceptions regarding comic books turning readers into out-of-touch delinquents have also hurt sale. Many parents fear that comics will brainwash children into believing that supermans and batmans actually exist in the world. For this reason, many parents forbid their children from reading comic books as in their view they carry no ethical or moral values. These attitudes have contributed to the lack of interest in comics as well as its drop in publication.

The comic book price guide also sheds some light on why comics are no longer sold. The price guide reveals that the cost of comic books has soared up with the success of movies like Batman, Spiderman, and Superman etc. making it unaffordable to many. Plus when it comes to buying storybooks parents prefer to buy their children fables or novels that will help them build up their vocabulary and learn proper English.

But these parents fail to realize that without fantasy and imagination as found in comics, a child's creativity cannot develop. Comic books help break the monotony in children's lives and refresh these young minds to face the challenges of daily life.
